Who Am I?

My name is Geri Sonkin and I've been serving the Long Island real estate community for the past 22 years with one basic focus, to impart enough information to buyers and sellers to help them make an educated decision, and to make the transition from one home to the other as stress free as possible.

How did I get here? I suppose I should start by telling you I've lived in New York all of my life, slowly working my way through the boroughs, and then onto Long Island 20 years ago. In a similar fashion, I segued into the world of real estate through the back door.

I was looking for a home for my family. As I went through the process of searching through available listings, I was surprised at first, then shocked by the Realtors that I dealt with. They seemed to have a singular inability to hear me. No matter how many times and in how many ways I made my needs known to them, they just didn't listen. Like a mantra, I found myself saying, over and over again, "I could do this better."

So, after spending all my spare time in my search and finally finding my house . . . and after telling myself I never wanted to look at another home as long as I lived, I found myself drawn inexorably into the business of Real Estate.

I'm sure we all know someone who is the first person we think of when we need advice, or when we need to vent. For many of my friends, I'm that person. Basically, I want everyone to be happy. I want them to find joy in their days and look for the best in the people they deal with. So I suppose it was natural that I chose this as a profession. As a Realtor, I see people at times of transition. They often need emotional support as much as a professional to represent them in the sale or purchase of their home. For many, making a move, whether around the corner or around the world, can be a time of great stress. And, if there is any other life altering situation involved, it can be daunting. I really enjoy my role as a partner in the process and love helping people make the right move.

When I'm not working (which is not often), I love decorating and have helped many friends to redo their homes. Its the creative process that appeals to me. I also like to just relax with friends and unwind.

Since I'm lucky enough to have my son as a partner in business, and since he and his family live within short driving distance, I get to spend time with my daughter-in-law and my adorable grandson as well. What a joy!

I'm also "mother" to two adorable, if rambunctious girls of the canine variety. Its hard to have a bad day when "the girls" are around (even though they have a predilection for comforter stuffing and shoes -- they've turned several pumps into open toed shoes and they've managed to turn my backyard into an eighteen hole golf course).

My other great passions include crafting (I'm pretty good at it), reading (I'm an avid reader), and writing (there's a great American novel living somewhere inside me).
